The giant squid, a creature of the deep, has long captured our imaginations. For centuries, these elusive animals were thought to be mythical, until they were first photographed alive in 2004. These real-life “ocean krakens,” as they are sometimes called, are indeed monsters of the deep, and according to some studies, they can grow to be larger than a school bus.

Giant Squid

Size and Scale

A statistical ecologist, Charles Paxton, from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, has estimated that giant squid could range from 19 to 90 feet in length, with a good bet being around 66 feet long. This would make them larger than the average school bus, which is about 45 feet long. These findings are based on data gathered over the past century on the length and dimensions of sighted squids, which Paxton then analysed statistically. In a previous analysis of more than 130 specimens, scientists said that none exceeded 42 feet (13 meters) in length. However, Paxton suggests that these previous studies underestimated the size that a giant squid could reach.

It’s important to note that the largest giant squid ever found measured 59 feet long and weighed almost a ton, according to National Geographic. Scientists measure giant squid based on specimens found washed up onshore, and from beaks found in the stomachs of sperm whales. Paxton also examined instances where beak size was measured along with mantle length, finding that beak size could help predict mantle length.

Controversy and Debate

Paxton’s claims are not without controversy. Steve O’Shea, a giant squid expert, believes that if exceptionally large giant squids existed, their beaks would have been found in sperm whale stomachs or seabed samples. He stated, “Large beaks belonging to large Architeuthis do not exist because the squid do not exist!”. Other scientists also question the data Paxton collected, as giant squid sightings are scattered and lack uniform record-keeping. Measurements may have been taken after “postmortem stretching or shrinking” or after parts of the squid were cut off.

Lifestyle and Behaviour

While the size of giant squids is still debated, their lifestyle and behaviour are also shrouded in mystery. Giant squid are rarely seen and have never been kept alive. They have eyes the size of dinner plates. It is thought that there are hundreds of thousands of giant squid living in the ocean, suggesting that there are plenty of chances for some to grow larger than previously suggested. These deep-dwelling creatures live in the open ocean, and some believe that their large size may make them less likely to be eaten by sperm whales.

Research suggests that giant squid may not be the aggressive predators that were once thought. Instead, they are believed to have a slower metabolism and therefore move slower than expected, waiting to ambush prey rather than chasing it. It’s worth noting that the colossal squid, which is different from the giant squid, was found to be more of a “big blob” than a fierce hunter, ambushing prey rather than running it down.

The Ongoing Search

The only way to prove Paxton right or wrong is to find a 66-foot long squid. The deep and frigid waters where these creatures live make it difficult for scientists to acquire new specimens. Scientists are still working to understand the biology of the giant squid, including how they reproduce.

The mystery of the giant squid continues, with new studies and analyses constantly challenging our understanding of these incredible creatures. It seems that for now, the idea of a school-bus-sized squid remains a tantalising possibility.
