The mantis shrimp might be small, but it packs a powerful punch! These fascinating marine creatures are known for their vibrant colours, incredible eyesight, and most notably, their lightning-fast strikes.

Two Types of Mantis Shrimp: Spearers and Smashers

There are around 450 different species of mantis shrimp, and they’re broadly categorised into two main types based on their hunting styles: spearers and smashers.

  • Spearers, as their name suggests, are equipped with sharp, spiny appendages that they use to impale soft-bodied prey like fish and worms.

  • Smashers, on the other hand, are the real heavy hitters of the mantis shrimp world. They possess club-like limbs that they use to deliver incredibly powerful blows. These punches are so strong that they can easily crack open the shells of crabs and clams, and have even been known to shatter aquarium glass!

Eyes Like No Other in the Animal Kingdom

Beyond their impressive hunting techniques, mantis shrimp are also renowned for their extraordinary vision. Their eyes are among the most complex in the animal kingdom, boasting 12 to 16 types of photoreceptors compared to the meagre three found in humans. This allows them to see a much broader spectrum of colours than we can, including ultraviolet light.

What’s even more remarkable is that each of their eyes can move independently and has its own depth perception. This gives them an almost unparalleled ability to perceive their surroundings and track their prey.

The Superpowered Punch

The smasher mantis shrimp’s punch is truly a marvel of nature. It accelerates with the speed of a bullet, reaching speeds of around 50 mph. This incredible acceleration generates cavitation bubbles, which are essentially tiny pockets of vacuum that implode with tremendous force. This implosion adds to the impact of the punch, delivering a double whammy of energy that can stun or even kill prey instantly.
