A family in Blackpool, England, got a delightful surprise when their new puppy, Ollie, dug up a small fortune in gold coins on his first walk in the park. Ollie, a Lagotto Romagnolo, is a breed known for its keen sense of smell and digging abilities. These dogs were originally bred in Italy to hunt waterfowl in marshlands, but nowadays they are primarily used for truffle hunting.
Ollie’s discovery consisted of 15 sovereign coins, potentially dating back to 1489. A gold dealer confirmed the coins’ legitimacy and valued them at £5,943.96 (approximately $7,564). While the cost of Ollie is unknown, it’s safe to say he’s more than paid for himself!
Beyond the monetary value, Ollie’s owner, Adam Clark, is thrilled with his “gold hunter” and eager for future adventures. He describes Ollie as a “very special pup” who “brings a lot to the table — quite literally!”
Besides their treasure-hunting skills, Lagotto Romagnolos are known for being excellent companions. They are easy to train, good with children, and hypoallergenic, making them suitable for families. However, their coats require regular grooming.
Ollie’s future treasure-finding potential remains a mystery, but one thing is certain: he’s brought immense joy to his family, which is ultimately priceless.
