Pappammal, a revered figure in the world of organic farming, sadly passed away on 27 September at the age of 109. She was a true inspiration, dedicating her life to sustainable agriculture and traditional farming practices.

  • Early Life and Farming: Born in 1914 in Devalapuram village in Coimbatore district, Pappammal, also known as Rangammal, faced early hardships. Orphaned at a young age, she and her two sisters were raised by their paternal grandmother in Thekkampatti. It was here that Pappammal’s journey in organic farming began, spanning decades and leaving an indelible mark on the agricultural community.
  • A Lifelong Advocate for Organic Farming: She started farming on 14 acres of land in Thekkampatti, eventually reducing it to 2.5 acres over time. Her unwavering commitment to organic methods and healthy food production earned her recognition as a farming legend, inspiring many with her dedication to sustainable practices.
  • Political Activism and Recognition: Beyond her contributions to agriculture, Pappammal actively participated in politics. As a member of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party, she served as a ward member of Thekkampatti Panchayat in 1959 and as a councillor in the Karamadai Panchayat Union. She was known for her involvement in significant political movements, including the anti-Hindi imposition protests and even the recent protests against the NEET exam. In recognition of her remarkable contributions to agriculture, Pappammal received the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2021.
