In the annals of ancient civilizations, tales of mysterious flying objects and advanced technologies often emerge, sparking debate about ancient technological advancements. India has stories woven into its rich mythological tapestry, in the form of “Vimānas”. Often depicted as flying chariots or celestial aircraft, Vimānas have ignited imaginations for centuries.

Enigma of Vimanas

Etymology and Descriptions

The Sanskrit term “Vimāna” loosely translates to “having been measured out” or “traversing”. In early Vedic literature, the term referred to a temple’s central structure or a deity’s palace. Over time, its usage expanded to describe aerial vehicles that traversed the sky and even space. Ancient Indian texts describe Vimānas in various forms, from bird-like structures to palatial flying chariots. Some accounts describe them as vast cities floating in the sky, complete with gardens.

Literary Mentions

Several ancient Indian scriptures, epics, and texts reference Vimānas:

  • Rigveda: Mentions mechanical birds and flying chariots.
  • Ramayana: Chronicles Rama’s adventures and references Vimānas, most notably the “Pushpaka Vimana,” a magnificent flying chariot that could change its form.
  • Mahabharata: Contains multiple references to aerial battles and sophisticated Vimānas.
  • Vaimānika Shāstra: This early 20th-century Sanskrit text provides detailed schematics and descriptions of Vimānas. It details drawings of a range of crafts, including the sources of fuel used to power them. The translations talk of elements and minerals like mica, quicksilver, and mercury, but also mentions strange liquids referred to as honey.

Interpretations

Given their detailed descriptions and recurring presence in ancient texts, Vimānas have sparked debates among historians, researchers, and enthusiasts. Interpretations include:

  1. Symbolic Representations: Vimānas are purely symbolic, representing spiritual mastery, enlightenment, or the prowess of deities.
  2. Historical Records: Accounts might be distorted records of advanced technological innovations lost over time or interactions with advanced civilizations.
  3. Extraterrestrial Contact: Vimānas are evidence of ancient India’s contact with extraterrestrial beings. Erich von Däniken points out that UFO sightings look similar to the Vimanas of ancient India.

Technology

The Vedas describe Vimanas of various shapes and sizes. There is the elephant-vimana with numerous engines, the agnihotra-vimana with two engines, and many other types named after animals or birds. The Vimanas could travel to other countries and planets. They were non-combustible, unbreakable, and invisible to enemies. They could render enemies into a suspended animation state and cause widespread destruction. Instructions found in texts detail the pilot’s knowledge of the airplane’s structure, how to drive the craft, how to take off, and how to manoeuvre without crashing. There are instructions on how to hide the flying machine from enemies by harnessing power in the 8th-atmosphere layer above the earth and attracting dark solar rays.

The Question

Descriptions of Vimanas and their capabilities raise the question of what powered them.

  • The Vaimānika Śāstra claims Vimānas were advanced aerodynamic flying vehicles, similar to a rocket capable of interplanetary flight. The propulsion of the Vimanas is by “Mercury Vortex Engines”, similar to electric propulsion.
  • Translated ancient Sanskrit documents reference a propulsion system based on antigravitational technology, analogous to “laghima”, a centrifugal force strong enough to counteract all gravitational pull.

Whether mythological wonders or potential evidence of advanced ancient technologies, Vimānas captivate the imagination. They remind us of humanity’s fascination with flight and the possibilities of the universe, and stand as a testament to ancient India’s storytelling tradition, where mythology, spirituality, and history often blur.
